There are some interesting opinions here, yes.

The problem as I see it is that eventually after all the nice discussion and debate, some people will eventually just go ahead and do what they initially wanted to. Several times (a long time ago now I admit) I have been approached regarding the retrobolting of an existing climbs and adding of abseiling stations. Not routes I established, but just as an expression of good will in "consultation" being a then resident. Despite voicing my strongly held opinion that retrobolting is wrong full stop (and hearing several others express the same opinion) the climb was deemed "in need of improvement" and got its little add on. Sham consultation.

What is the solution for those who would like to see things "just left the way they were"? More reasoned discussion? A letter to the editor? There arn't many options unfortunatly especially when the same consultation process happens again again. Until the tide has turned and the way things are done is the way of the retrobolter.

And without getting hung up on retrobolting, the adding of abseiling stations is, yes, just another low down scumbag form of retrobolting. So stop it.
