I knew an Australian who lived in Southern France, spoke fluent French, though with an slight accent. In Paris, if he spoke to somebody he didn't know (shop keeper, etc) in French, they'd answer in English. If he spoke to them in English, they'd answer in French.

From what I gather though, Parisians mainly seem to be rude to english speaking people they think are English. Some other Australian friends of Asian heritage said they found Parisians really helpful.
