On the topic of sponsorship, here's two pieces from Dave MacLeod:

From the first one: "It was really great when I realised that chasing sponsorship as a sole income was not the way forward!"

Of course Dave M isn't short of sponsors now, though it seems that he's built that up over quite some time through climbing dvd's, lectures, his online presence, coaching and writing. His audience is what attracts the sponsors.

He does have the benefit of living in Britain. 60 million people with more people interested in climbing, and geographically smaller which makes it easier for him to travel to provide coaching or give lectures.

Would his approach work in Australia? Maybe... maybe not. But the key part is to find creative ways of generating an audience - ways which will hopefully generate a sustainable income.
