my own view of the article is that there a question as to the style of the ascent in mountainerring that is
the defining point.
ie to climb everest with oxygen or without. Clearly its a bid deal to climb everest in either style (not my
cup of tea) but too think that one is contributing to the mountianerring community or whatever by doing so
is questionable.
Messner set the standard on Everest, most choose not to follow and perhpas with good reason in that
they simply couldnt do it without the aid of oxygen...but as the title of Andrews article suggest..its all a bit
predictable.
A similar example would be doing the 30th repeat of Punks, grabbing a couple of the silver jugs along the
way to get you to the top. Or perhaps you go and climb Missing Link with pre-placed gear...good for you!
I dont think that you could discount the ascent in your own terms, if that was where you set your standard
of what is acceptable, but outside of this it would be looked upon as being "questionable".
I though the question of "we must ask why we climb" was directed to those at the "cutting edge" (rather
than to say ......me) and that above all else it is the style of the ascent that is important not the
destination. well thats my throw on things anyways.
i dont think he would be so pomous as to think that if youre not on the cutting edge you dont count.
