I thought you were not allowed to collect firewood from any kind of national park/state forest. It is my understanding that native animals such as lizards, snakes and small mammals often use the dead wood as houses/nests, and that the decomposition of the wood in a natural way (ie. being rotted into the soil) is really important for the overall state of the nutrient cycle...
Considering the levels of re-vegetation going on at Arapiles and thinking about how long this has been happening (not too long looking at some of the pictures in the guidebook, where the bottom of the crag tends to be green lawns, instead of scrubby undergrowth), every bit of available wood is going to have quite an important effect on the overall success of such a young ecosystem - therefore leave it where it is and buy some (hopefully) plantation grown wood from the servo, or spare wood from round your place. |
