For anyone who doesn't already know... "The Sanctum" is loosely based on a real event that happened in Mexico a few years ago, although Hollywood has done it's usual thing- over sensationalizing and totally changed the story for the big screen.

Here's a great article about the original incident where some British military were basically on vacation caving and part of the group got trapped for 2 weeks after a flood. They had food and equipment and were totally prepared to just wait it out until the Mexican officials freaked out about it. They insisted on "saving" them and made it a huge international incident, claiming the British government had nefarious intents.

As for "127 hours"- it was surprisingly good IMO. I went into it expecting to come out disappointed and bored since we are talking an entire movie with one guy talking to himself. I thought it would be another "Castaway"... YAWN. This is a rare case where the movie is far better than the book. I've always been uncomfortable with how Ralston capitalized on his "accident", but the film stands as a pretty nice piece of work. It is stylistically really cool, the acting is spot on, and the screenplay keeps you totally gripped the whole time.
