We have used a visa debit card with a credit union and just collect cash from atms in whatever country we were in , currency is charged to our account in $a at apretty good rate and usually with a $2.oo fee to the atm owner . Make sure you have a credit card as well as the debit as some hotels / all car hire wont deal with you if you dont have a credit card , but will happily let you pay with the debit card . If wooried about the security of the card use, use the credit card as they cant take more than your limit wereas the debit card could empty all your money . Just make sure you have some small amount of whatever currency for small items . Got caught short in Basel Switzland when no access to toilets without swiss coins and atms only give out notes not good !! I am certain the conversion rate for each transaction was less than 1% which is pretty good and you dont have to change back any unused amounts when you leave
