one in a hundred year event refers to an intensity of rain over a given period and such intensity can occur randomly . In early 70's there were 2 1in 100 rain events over the melbourne cbd which had water over 1metre deep rundown Elizabeth st with a mini washed into the basement of london stores opposite the gpo . With septic tanks even though flooded unlikely to have much of their contents leak into the floods as the is no flow unles the toilet rim is lower in the house than the level of the flood but blocked by sand bags . A friends house was started to flooded like this as sandbags around the outside were 1 metre higher than the house floor level . It took 6 people half an hour to strip off doors put up mattress and carpet etc to avoid the looming water only item ending up damaged was the piano that collapsed one of the drums and had the veneer finish peel off
