I talked to Giles at St Peters last night (and James Holbrook) and tried to get them to hop onto the thread to put their opinion in, Giles as an FA of many routes there.

I hope he gets on here but if not, to sum up his reaction - he scoffed at using anything but the best available current methods. He said carrots were only used because that was all that was available at the time. We didn't talk about SGABS but considering he re-bolted Toyland (his route) with rings, I take it he prefers them

Re lower-offs, he said that when he went to Europe at some stage he was amazed the clifftops looked pristine, unlike many here, due to the ubiquitous lower-offs. Its definitely a factor (as was raised in a Ben Lomond thread) - two rings to lower off, which particularly if painted have very little visual impact, can save a lot of degradation to the clifftop and walk downs.

The difference in price between rings and SGABS: - climbing anchors are selling rings for $37.90 for a pack of ten. If people are interested I can supply M10 SS machine bolts for $150 for 100..
