I personally was pretty bummed to recently hear toyland at the county had been rebolted on rings. I first climbed that when it was close to my limit and enjoyed the character of the bolting including the out of reach carrots. All bolting is a display of the character of the person who bolted it. Whether it be run out, staying on the arete or skirting around the hard bit. This includes the use of carrots. Moorhead's routes at Arapiles are an example of this. Routes I personally like to do every now and then.
Saying that they add nothing but an inconvenience would be the same argument for bolting trad climbs.
It would seem some people would prefer rings and some would prefer some routes on carrots. There are plenty of climbs with rings. The esoteric routes with carrots are slowing disappearing. Shouldn't there be something for everyone.
