Hey Nick,
If your car is fuel injected then it would have coil packs/coil. When coil packs crap themselves you will find that its not gettin the spark to all the cylinders and your car will be running on 3 or 2 cylinders depending on how stuffed the coil pack is. This can also cause an intermittent fault as when the car is cold it will start fine but as soon as it heats up the coil will start to break down and cut out making the car run again on 3 or so cylinders. Check and replace the coil pack or maybe in your car the coil.
The coil can be found if you follow the spark plug lead coming out the top center of the rotor cap it will be pluged into a round cylinder and thats the coil.
