We moved to Katoomba from the city a few years ago. (In Melbourne now though.) We only had to be in the city for 3 or 4 days of the week, which was fine for commuting and definitely worth it for the 3-4 day weekends! But commuting days can be very dull. My commute day was: wake up at 5.30am; train at 6.15am; get home at 9pm; bed at 10.30pm to wake up at 5.30am ... And in winter I basically never saw the mountains in daylight during the commuting part of the week!
We caught the train, which I consider to be the best option for commuting. I hated driving because it was dead time -- on the train you can read a book, use the laptop etc.
As for the lifestyle, well that depends on what you like. If you want pubs, nightlife, lots of good cheap take-out food etc then stay in the city. But if you like trail running, afternoon walks, climbing, bouldering, and all things bush then move to the mountains! Also, if you are renting, you can expect to get a much nicer house for the same price as in the city. Great if you want a proper garden. |
