Proper 'machine bolts' have the thread all the way up to the head. The problem with this is it puts the minor diameter of the thread in the highest stress part of the intsalltion. ie. if you used a M10x1.0 bolt you would only have an effective diamter of about 8mm which is is only 64% of the area of a full 10mm diameter shaft. It would be preferable to use bolts that don't have this characteristic ie. threaded for the first 50% of the shaft from the end so you get maximum shaft material right where it's needed. |
