It seems you are correct. I must have been reading the various articles relating to the myth described here: http://members.iinet.net.au/~bush/onfangs.html

I wonder if the mothballs' anti snake properties are just another myth ?

I came across another article about a guy who was bitten by a brown, on the thigh through jeans. He had no ill effects. The article claimed the jeans protected him but it looks more likely to have been a dry bite.
