AK420 is quite good for haulbags and rope bags and isnt bery expensive. its very similar material to that used in petzl rope bags. there are also some heavier materials (all vinyl coated polyester) which usually have dura- or dyna- in their name (eg dura-tec and dyna-proof). Most canvas workshops will stock AK420 at about $18 a metre or you could try Ricky Richards in Sydney who are a wholesaler/retailer. very good prices but you need to know exactly what material you want. next day shipping.

in terms of design i always put a piece of sacrifical 50mm webbing around the base to protect the bottom seam from abrasion.if you sew the webbing onto the bag about 25mm from the base seam line before attaching the base, once the base is sewn in the webbing will lay over the seam and wear will occur on the webbing not the bag.

my bags have removable hip belts and shoulder straps which are virtually the same as on metolius bags. The hip belt slides under several strips of webbing to secure it and the shoulder straps attach to two short (150mm) pieces of 50mm webbing that are attached to the bag. There are also two 25mm buckles at the top of the bag that get treaded with webbing on the shoulder straps to pull the load in closer to my shoulders, its similar to that found on larger walking packs.
