Back in my younger years while living on the farm, when hunting and fishing was all I did (before climbing) I grew up with stories of the Mulgoa Monster! A large black panther that raided chicken pens ate the neighbours dog and attacked a elderly woman who chased it away with a broom!!
Not far from the farm ( with in walking distance for a big cat) We had Lions Safari Park in Warragamba and Bullen’s Animal World...Oh and a privet zoo at Notre Dame. Some of you might remember these places? We could hear the male lions roar daily! no shit! Now I would go shooting pretty much every day after school and on weekends except for Sunday....not religious it was just the rule. There were many a feral animal that crossed and fell to my sights and way to many of the feline type!
I spent many hours in the bush at all times of the day and night. You get to know your surroundings pretty bloody well! When something doesn’t sound right or look right you quickly pick up on it. Now I will say that I have never seen a big cat but I have seen signs and evidence that points to there existence. We run cattle on the farm. One morning we found remains of a healthy calf that was to big for a dog to take down and to healthy for pigs to have a go at. It was eaten not attacked! Our farm hand in his 50yrs plus of working on the farm had never seen anything like this before. It wasn’t the first time a calf had been found...but generally you would find the remains days later...by this time everything had had a go at it. But on this morning it was fresh! This was brushed off as being normal. You always loose a calf or two.. its farming!...maybe..

Now and then...every few months or years I would find a large foot print or prints in the mud at the edge of a dam or on a trail. Being stupid I just mistook them for a large dog... The thing is the dogs were always living close and you would always hear them or see them...we never found or saw a large dog...Cats are smart and shy and have a large range in there territory...

So maybe it was the Mulgoa Monster!

There were always stories of animals escaping the zoo's...maybe even a panther!

We found a monkey on a bridge once!
