First, replace the stock neck or wrist strap with a lanyard you can clip to something -- one of those accessory biners work well for this. I lost a camera in the Franklin River and dropped another off a cliff in New Guinea before learning that lesson.

If you're climbing multipitch routes with a pack, clip the lanyard outside your pack and drop the camera in the top, or in a top pocket. (Mine's got an inside top pocket which is perfect.) I don't use any sort of case when the camera's in my pack because I hate fiddling the camera in and out of the case; it's much easier fishing the camera out of the pack with the cord, and it's easy to do with one hand.

If it's cool and you're climbing with a jacket, stash the camera in your top pocket and clip the lanyard to the zipper loop. If you're worried about bashing the camera, cut up a small piece of sleeping mat to fit your pocket and stash it in there too. It's easier to dig the camera out of a top pocket than a side pocket: the top pocket's usually on the left, which works well if you're right handed. (Not so great if you're left-handed.) Again, I don't use a case when the camera's in my pocket.

Using a case is a last resort. It's better to attach it to something up high -- like a pack strap or gear sling -- rather than your belt. Unfortunately most cases are designed to attach to a belt, and they're fiddly to drive with 1 hand. I have a Lowepro case for a compact, and one for an SLR, and both work OK.

Congratulations on your new acquisition, by the way -- I'm hanging out for a GF-1 with that pancake 20mm lens.
