I use strobes a LOT but rarely for climbing. Personally I just get jollies out of just waiting for the right natural light. I do agree they can be used very well (Kemple's work is a good example, as is some of Ladzinski's, and slightly off topic if you're into the sliding kind of folk then check out Erik Seo's night skiing shots) and I do occasionally stick in a couple speedlights for fill but I've never really bothered lugging 'proper' strobes out just because I've never found a situation where I thought them truly necessary to achieve what i had in my head. having said that, there are a couple ideas in the pipeline...
unfortunately strobes are VERY over/badly used by most attempts I have seen in climbing photography, just *another* gear fad that is used insanely well by a tiny number of people and should be confiscated from a lot of others! :)

as for Simon Carter not using them, I don't know that they would mesh too well with his style? just my observations, i dont think ive ever talked to him about it (if i have i certainly dont remember)
