Yeah it is sobering stuff Mr Wombat and I'm glad you found it interesting (and impressed, cos in discussions such as these, people are often more focused on presenting their own argument than on considering another viewpoint on its own merits).
Livestock is being culled as we speak (and boy how many times have people said to me "yes but I'm eating them as fast as I can") - it's just that we keep growing more of it!
But I can't see the situation reversing or even stabilising, no. Most people regard any suggestion that they modify their diet with disbelief or even hostility. Even the concept of "meat free Mondays" is viewed as some bleeding heart hippie trick to rob us of our cultural heritage! Meanwhile, meat consumption is only increasing in countries finding greater prosperity, such as China:
