As for cruelty , a stressed animal wont put on weight , and only a few times in its life is an animal stressed , eartaging, dehorning (for about 60 seconds), vacinating , drenching, and castrating would be the worst . Yes sale yards trucking and abbatoirs cause stress but once in the kill box the animal is unconscious and quickly despatched .
the vast majority of australias beef is raised in areas that wouldnt support cropping and cattle are one of the few ways of getting food from that area of land . Some areas only support1 cow per square kilometre over a whole season.
