An asian friend from high school told me a story from when he lived in asia (I forget where exactly). He came home one day to find an escaped mental patient on his front lawn roasting his dog over a fire and eating it. Despite having a dog I love dearly myself and realizing how terrible that would be, I burst into uncontrollable tears of laughter.

As for eating meat, I think in some respects it is actually a nice symbiotic relationship where we care for the animals for some time then make them part of ourselves. My dinner wouldn't have existed at all without my plans to eat them. You can argue that some life is better than none. I'm not much of a fan of big fields of wheat etc where any other life form (plant, insect, animal) is exterminated i.e. zero biodiversity.
