I put up the $2500 deposit for the NUENERGY offer of a 1 kw pv system on my mother inlaws house. For those eligible for the $8000 grant the $2500 would be refunded upon connection to the grid . (the $8000 paid diect to nuenrgy ) Money went in June and system finally installed and the refund of $2380 has been made - $120 deducted for the extra of a tiled roof . total cost were $120 , $50 lost interest ? $100 for electrical inspection and $300 for bidirectional meter . or $570 all up will produce 1400 kwh p.a. say 1000 used at a saving of $160 and 400 fed back at 60 cents or $240 is a return of $400 pa or paid back in 18 months .

my own pv system is not quite so productive
all up cost to me $35000 for 5kw and anual production of around 8000kwh which is worth $1280 or with the feed back currently 23.5 cent a kwh $1475 for the year
It does get better though as I can depreciate the system over 10 years at a tax rate of say 30% , the fed back tarrif goes to 60 cents a kwh and power is going up 12% in january . Assuming that all I need is a return of the reserve bank rate , increases in electricity cost of 10% p.a (low I think) and the annual depreciation of the capital costs I will have all my money back in 12 years then getting $4000 of elecricity free each year . If the feed back increased from the current 30% to 50 % by better demand management then pay back would be around 8 years.

the current rebate system gives the most return ($6000 ) on a 1.5kw system which would have a pay back in 3 to 4 years
