I think most girls get into climbing via a significant male friend - for me it was a boyfriend. I ditched the boyfriend after a while, but kept the climbing.

Ironically I found another climber to go out with, who is firstly a wonderful guy, but also climbs much harder than the first.

Is it just me or do other girls "go up the grades" this way? Seems like a bit of a trend; I do know a few girls who have done this; not deliberately however.

Nevertheless, it is a pleasant way of learning to climb. You get someone who is keen to teach you and very experienced, as well as getting the benefits of a boyfriend. I have been with my current bf for the past 7 years (among other things he keeps finding new and interesting crags to climb at). However it has lead to a bit of laziness on my part; when climbing with bf I rarely put the draws on or set up anchors - he is much quicker.

Pity that many climbers here can't exploit this avenue of learning to climb: being hetero and all that.
