In these situations I always ask "what would the rescue helo / plane be doing if not rescuing somebody?" - sitting in a hangar somewhere, depreciating? No doubt the occasional rescue operaton is a valuable training exercise for the police and emergency services as well. Have done "Featherest" twice in winter and you definitely need some form of traction and self-arrest to summit safely. But good on him for being out there and giving it a go! We all make mistakes...
