That's not a stupid question, just a miss understanding i'd think.

I think what's being implied here is that lower offs are being done with the wieghted rope directly around the tree trunk. Thus the friction, be damage the tree.

Obviously if you just rap' off and retrieve , there's only a fraction the amount of friction. ( But still does do damage ).

So the difference between rapping and lowering off, is a fraction too much friction.
