Got a job going in Western Sydney that may be of interest to someone on here. I have just spent 12
very rewarding months in the role.
Co-Facilitating 12 week programs (4 days per week) for 'At Risk Youth' in Western Sydney.
Working with another facilitator with groups of 12ish, 2 days per week with Year 8 boys and 2 days per
week with Year 8 girls.
No formal requirements or qualifications, just positive, patient and calm personality. There is 3 minutes
of maths and 4 minutes of English done each day, thats about the level of my (and their) attention
span!
The kids are not 'hardcore' or 'scary' kids, just kids who for one reason or another are not reaching their
potential. The program works on building confidence, self esteem and life skills using experiential
learning. Lots of games, team building activities and excursions.
Based on a 200 acre property near the base of the Blue Mountains, we take groups bushwalking,
sailing, climbing, on interactive animal experiences, to correctional facilities (thats an eye-opener) etc.
My collegue and I recently incorporated a 'Life-Skills' section to the program with First Impressions,
Communication, Awareness and Conflict Resolution proving to be quite powerful.
The program is funded by DET (Links to Learning), but run by the Sisters of Mercy (mamre.com.au),
which means Nuns and stuff but no religious overtone in the program at all.
Pay is just over $150p/d plus fringe benefits and opportunities for leave during school holidays. Hours
are 0830 to 1545
Would suit anyone with experience in guiding/ team building/ scouts/ coaching/ youth work etc. and a
passion for making a positive difference for people and the community.
