Use of the grid is one thing and most people can accept that by measuring inputs to the grid from different sources and outputs to different customers there is no real problem in paying for accounts from different retailers or paying for different products.

There is however a huge nasty problem wih GreenPower in that under Australian Law, all that anyone receives is standard grid electricity at standard grid emissions. Under the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER) Act 2007, and the NGER Determination (2008) all the greenhouse reduction benefits and use benefits of grid connected renewable sources are assigned to all customers in proportion of their use.

The zero emissions printed on GreenPower customer bills are a double counted benefit. If you think you are reducing your emissions through buying GreenPower you are double counting. If you are happy to donate Greenhouse reductions to all others including the most energy intensive and largest businesses that pick up most of your contribution then this is fine.

As a 100% GreenPower customer I would prefer the Government to legally assign these benefits to me and to net them out of the state grid factor calculations, but unless customers demand that this happens nothing will change.

GreenPower is really nothing more than a donation mechanism for customers to donate money and greenhouse reductions to all other users based on the Renewable Energy Certificate which is nothing more than a proof of generation record.
