I agree, an awesome person.

I was fortunate to know Andrew briefly as a work associate and I was interested in many of his pursuits. A lovely guy. An almost silent achiever in mountaineering and rock climbing, with many new routes in Australia and alpine routes overseas.

I am a family man now too, and I find it increasingly difficult to pursue my previous adventure ambitions, however, I still take risks, all rock climbers take varying levels of risks. Its all down to personal perception.
Andrew was gifted at reducing risk in his activities through his skill, experience and calculating personality. He decided along with family and friends that the level of risk for crossing the Tasman in a kayak was acceptable. Nobody can ever completely eliminate risk.

I am saddened that there is no immediate solace from his adventure to family and friends. Like it or not, in our structured and legally obsessed world we need extremely motivated people like Andrew to inspire and educate.
Putting aside any personal judgments on whether Andrew should have pursued this project...this is surely one of the most incredible human feats both physically and mentally in modern adventure.
