Risk is intersetsing, i am sure some kyackers think rock climbers are nuts. The fact he made it so close, shows it was not a foolish - doomed to die idea, IMHO. If non survival was inevitable, the chances are it would have happend earlier. No one goes into something like that, or even doing a climb, thinking they are going to die. Why would you start a climb knowing that is going to happen? You wouldn't. Dito for him - he'd obviously done to preparation and had the experience to believe it was possible. And he was so close he was damm close to being correct. I think its a mistake to estimate the risk to him based on the risk to yourself of doing the same thing. eg I'd die trying to climb some of HB's climbs, but for HB, it's probably less risk than driving a car.
