No chance the young bloods get to keep all the good fun to themselves. Some Aussies agree and I recall a few grey beards cranking away at Tinbeerwah when I was there a few years back. What a grim fate to croak behind your desk at work or in front of a TV set watching the All Blacks Thrash the Wallabies some more! No retreat, no surrender, no white flags - you got to go/crank till your gone - in my books. Climbing is a good rehab option for old Canucks with too many scandilous war wounds derived from Old Timers Hockey or intersections with nefarious Queen'sland climbing vixens. I currently look like something arising from the graveyard in Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video - a badly busted beak and a couple of black/red eyes resulting with a close intersection with a round, hard rubber flying object as I coached a kid's hockey team.
My face cast comes off in a couple of days so I will rejoin the living and with the spring melt underway the crags are beckoning. Mt. Aussie will soon be free of the grips of the snow gods and the vegemite laced routes calling for more attention, Fate is where it finds you and probably time to conquer that hoary beast once and for all. There is no doubt that my insurgency down under will continue in due course and I look forward to wresting a few more skeletons from their parched closet at Araps and wherever. The day you stopping climbing is the day you stop living.
