Darran Mountains (Milford Sound, 4 hours from Queenstown, NZ, on the way to the Antarctic)
Righteo, another climbing event in NZ this winter. Not instruction, but a climbing event in the big bad lands of the Darran Mountains. For those wanting to get in on some winter action. You'll need a bit of mountaineering nouse about you, but there is climbing of all technical difficulties right outside the hut. Details are at http://www.mountainz.co.nz/content/article/event/event12.php
Cheers, Glenn

Last year it was a 10-0 victory to the mountains as we fought our way up and through big powder after some massive dumps. The amount of snow last year was a bit of a bugger. No snow all winter until the day before the meet, and then it dumped metres, closed the road for three days (unheard of these days), and we didn't have snowshoes. In saying that, everyone was just amazed with the place and vowed to come back this year. I'm planning on being there for most of this winter. And we are due for better luck this year :-) The photos in the link are from last year. Also, you can read the last part of http://www.mountainz.co.nz/content/article/article.php?article=061208_winter.php&direct=nz for a report.

I'm scared by the bad weather potential. Summer looks much nicer!

I agree but you don't get to take out all your aggression by whacking your ice tools into things in summer.
In winter you can do that whole Scottish mixed thing and really suffer.

I did manage to whack some tools into ice last summer (in the Darrens). You just have to walk further to get to something you can whack! We had about 5 days or puurfect weather when we were there... i like that you can escape to the cave sport areas when it all goes to shit as well.

IF there is ice and IF climbers are around WHEN there is ice, then the potential there is limitless in winter
Homer is a pretty cool place in winter if you can get your way in there (ie roads open)
But yes beware of weather and avo's
Still, worth the trip.
