Why the distress? Finding and being able to utilize kneebars is part of the bag of tricks called 'technique' - some would say if you can't or don't use them then your limiting your capabilities and making life hard for yourself. The concept of not utilizing them to make a route more difficult is, in my opinion, absurd. Then again, there are people who face climb cracks because they can't jamB. Each to there own I suppose.
Pads or no pads. Again, leave it to the individual climber. Most of us use ropes, chalk and climbing shoes, and may even use tape up to protect from blowing tendons or to protect the hands whilst crack climbing - whats the diff with pads to protect whilst knee-barring? I for one have had some massive gouges and scraps whilst knee barring (i use them when I can for my technique these days seems to be better than my strength) and would have liked a pad or two to make to make the experience more enjoyable.
