If you have "done a bit of top rope solo" then you would have used a steel malion with the gri gri?
Rather than an ordinary locking carabiner that could twist, and end up cross loading at a much weaker
rating than normal ?

Yes, for lead climbing, if the gri gri is not upright then it might not load correctly, or the rope might run
across the levering section that causes it to lock, and therefore prevent it from doing so!
