Getting back to the photogrpahy pazcoop has some really good points - particularly that Josh is not wanting to make money out of it. That was very clear.

Also the unprecedented millions raised around the country and the support and concern shown by fellow Australians really could not be there for the victims without some form of information (ie. journalism including visual images) about what is going on in Victoria. I heard on the radio this morning that one woman has been working day and night getting truck loads of supplies donated such as toiletries, tents, furnishings etc. so that people can move back to their land and communities asap and start to rebuild homes. If we couldn't see the devastation by way of visual images we wouldn't have any real concept of it. It has been clear that some victims have wanted to tell their story and this can be cathartic.

Everywhere you go you see people collecting for the fire victims. Apart from the gifts of a physical nature people are sending deep concern, prayers and empathy for victims. Those things have an energy of their own. What people see on TV and in newspapers moves them deeply.

Bad journos and money-making intrusive photojournalists will be there but that doesn't take away from the massive benefits of the media. Just like there are ambulance chasing lawyers there are also many who work for little money in not-for-profits, Legal Aid and for other human rights organisations and disability groups. They may be the minority but that doesn't mean they should all give up does it?
