On a vaguely related matter . . . was discussing grades with a friend yesterday and we couldn't agree on how a grade is arrived at. Is it purely a measure of overall difficulty or is it a measure of the most difficult technical move on the climb? On a long, sustained pitch, for example, if there are 5 moves at a particular technical difficulty, is this graded higher than a shorter pitch with just one move of the same difficulty or are they usually given the same grade? In other words, does the pump factor figure in determining a grade? |
