You hit the nail on the head there.

In the good old days most Australians took a quiet pride in being Australian and we used to snigger at the over the top patriotism that seemed compulsory in other countries. Then we started getting louder and feeling superior.

I think this new loud nationalism is as much an affront to old-fashioned conservatism as it is to inner city PC values. In the more distant good old days, people would probably have considered the Australian flag as something you run up a flagpole and salute. They would probably have felt very uncomfortable about seeing it being worn as a cape.
