don't underrate fear, its a valuable climbing tool once well understood.

if you want to address fear a very good starting point is to read the new toughness training for sports, james loehr. then direct your attention to climbing by finding a synopsis of the rock warriors way (or read the whole thing if you've loads of time and can put up with someone telling you their own problems).

one thing i've learned this year is success/failure orientation. the best illustration i came across was a recent interview of JB Tribout * who's back climbing 8c's...in his heyday his orientation was defending a minimum grade now its about letting that go and seeing if he can still succeed on something freaking hard; a round about way of saying fear of failure held him back.

* as an aside, it turns out a few years later that JB is the much mocked "method man" from my Sardinian TR's...i should have taken the occassion to have had a chat with him!
