Getting back into climbing last year, I had 'the fear', because I didn't trust myself (or the gear - especially hanging off a ring on a quickdraw 25m off the deck, until Fantini screamed at me that I looked like I was incompetent - got over it quick after that) . I finally got over the fear about six months ago because I started to trust myself. I now look for situations in my climbing where I want the fear because then I know I'm pushing myself (then the mind clears, and you enter the Zen Zone). Having good belayers certainly helps control the fear. BTW, that certainly was one of my fears - could I trust myself enough to not hurt anyone else - I really work hard at being a better belayer too.
