Good post Bert.

I'd agree with you if those people dirtbagging are sustaining themselves by growing their own food. I dont think this is the case though (although some people at Arapiles im sure do odd jobs on the local farms). If they were growing their own food, and largely self sufficient, then they would indeed be setting a fine example.

There is something ironic about a view that the dirtbag lifestyle is somehow a worthy statement against western style capitalist growth, when it is western style capitalist growth that has created a society wealthy enough to allow people the option of living that same dirtbag lifestyle.

Really, I dont think its a big deal. Most people dirtbag for a year or two at the most, financed by their own savings. No different to taking a 'gap year' to backpack.
