I don't know if this is old hat, but this morning in the news on the 'net was a story about Dawa Steven Sherpa and eco dunnies on Everest (the story was no where near as interesting as what Britney was up to so it was dumped by this afternoon), and there was a mention that he led a big clean up on Everest in May, and they recovered the remains of a "British climber" who died in 1972. Having read some of Bonnington's books lately I was interested, and I Googled and found Dawa Steven Sherpa's Facebook page and asked him if it was Tony Tighe, the Aussie climber who perished in the Kumbu icefall when a serac fell on him when he was in Bonington's expedition. He sent me the following reply this afternoon:
Re: Body recovered on Everest
Namaste Nick,
My uncle, Pertemba Sherpa was BC manager of Eco Everest Expedition 08. Pertemba was Sirdar of Sir Chris' expedition in 1972 and identified the remains as that of Tony Tighe.
Pertemba transported the remains off the glaciers and buried it near Pumori Base camp, on the moraine.
