Cleaning up old aid lines 29-Oct-2008 At 1:43:37 PM Dave J
Message

Aid climbers and free climbs are both attracted to major lines...I think those routes would all have been
climbed properly even if they hadnt been previously aided.

I guess when you put up an aid route you're kind of saying this will never be free climbed....ever
(That's the only justification I can see for establishing an aid line anyway).

That was certainly the mindset when things like Gilgamesh and the Inquisition were aided....or Ozy or
Procul Harem, Thunder Crack or even Cassandra for that matter. I think when Henry Barber came out
and stormed up a bunch of what was generally considered to be unclimbable that was kind of the end
of aiding at arapiles...people realised that just because they could even concieve of climbing a line did
mean that no-one else would be able do it.
I think what you can imagine being climbed is probably only 5 grades harder that what you could
actually climb.

If its clean aid ...I guess it does no damage. But I just dont see the point.
