gara gorge. 16k from armidale. many granite alternatives, plus boulder hopping running up and down creeks. (you can do this to dangars falls which offers a warumbungles multipitch feel. This was and is part of the fitness regime of one of the '88 everest team who spent an unreasonable and unrepeated stay above the 'death zone' ), then chandler-wollomombi ridge canyoning/rambling fun(down highest falls in southern hemisphere), basalt at ebor falls, sandstone down the hill after ebor and on the way to surf.
a uni with a mountaineering club.
a mountain designs store to link up.
a climbing wall (only 7m) at the uni.
there's mucho bouldering, the uncarved block website folks will already know about armidale bouldering)
camping, and swimming at the blue hole. no camp fees.
its on the way from melb to frog, and girraween is in between.
and it's the scene of the only multi-pitch climb that i have ever established
(Flight of the Bumbly, 45m 19) (i'd say 18)
(and it's multi quality : an constricting, initially crumbly, offwidth corner that firms to a safe stance under a roof, where one confronts a rounded horizontal break, with NO feet, that takes you 3m left to a solid arm bar and then a nice corner up to the belay that you don't want to miss.
second pitch is a ramble, making a point of not touching the horn of rock with the chain wrapped around it. this prevents the second pitch from falling onto the first pitch, it is not a belay or pro thing).
third pitch is a fingery face with 3 carrots.
a complete climb. if you like wolgan, but prefer granite, this is for you.\
and there's Mt Alexander.
Dog Rocks is one of the world's best camp sites. because it isn't.
golden popint reservoir for swimming, many old quarries to explore.
fairly pissweak, yet with 20+ challenges.
