my take on outdoor retail industry is that its just like any retails store except worse. & by that I mean the customer base market is small & the customers that you really want to talk to are a bunch of cheapskates that constantly try for discounts. The rest are the wanabees who wear their goretex & fleece to the coffee shop for a morning latte. The gear is virtually all ordered from overseas, takes a long time to arrive & then half your customers go buy it off the net for half the price.

getting into distribution/management would be the way to go but I don't know how easy/fast it would be to get there. Working on the front line would be the best way to learn the industry but you'll get paid shite while working on the front line.

I guess greater than 50% of outdoor retail stores in Aust are franchises, ie not that many are company owned.
