I bought a fairly high quality Canon scanner that was both flatbed and has a bit for transparencies, but I wouldn't recommend this. It takes a LONG time and the results are not all that great.

If you need high quality have large quantities of slides, and will continue to do so, then I guess it might be worth going for a dedicated film scanner. Otherwise, I would explore the commercial option.

As for the resolution you need, I think you have to work that out based on the original image size and target image size and whether it's going to print or screen. There are articles on the web re this (a lot of which are probably rubbish!).

If you are not going to be doing any of this on an ongoing basis, I would recommend just getting a cheap multi function printer for your document needs and getting the rest done at the lab. E.g. in Melbourne http://www.prismcolor.com.au/index.html
