Here's a good one.

with open hand and splayed fingers place your hand on a flat surface. Starting with your pinkie finger lift all your fingers in turn without moving your palm. Its quite easy to get the ends of your fingers about 5cm off the surface.

Now try it with your fist loosely clenched and your second knuckle on each finger in contact with the surface along with the heel of your palm. Lift each curled finger in turn to at least parallel with the surface. Having any troubles with a specific finger? try lifting it in tandem with the middle finger only. Easier?

Its because the tendons in some people's fingers have not adapted and evolved. While you try to lift your ring finger idependently it is being held down by the opposing tendon on your middle finger (the tendon names escape me).

Never fear my friends - you can still climb and lead an otherwise normal life like the rest of us. You'll just have to stick to sport climbing - and perhaps an automatic car.... and vote Liberal because you don't understand the concept of Utopia and a brotherhood of man. (sorry got carried away).
