I agree that ethically it is the same, but gee wiz it is soooo much more convenient to clip a ring/FH/FP. Thus I agree with Macciza in so much as a carrot being an artificial version of a placement (especially when using older bolt plates on newer ssgi's). It doesn't make much difference to me when climbing well within my limits, but when I am pushing my limits I love the feeling of achievement having done more than clip a qd to a ring. I also do tend to gravitate towards the shiny ringbolted route as opposed to the carroted route next to it due to a lake of moral fortitude when it comes to convenience climbing.
I always have these internal debates and have come to the conclusion that I am getting older and "things aren't as good as they were when I was a lad". Yet I am quite happy to go and equip a couple of new routes with some fixed hangers.
Oh the duality of a tortured soul!!!
