Grades are a funny thing for sure.

The fear factor plays a big part. harder on trad, easier on good bolts and easier again on rop rope. some routes are pumpy but technically easy and others are technically hard but not stenuous. I suspect a mantle 4m above a dodgey peice is always gonna feel heaps harder.

Style is important and cracks are classic for that. if you cant jam properly then it is near impossible.

A while ago i was very unclimbfit but could get up a grade 20 slab but struggle on a steeper 18, just cause i couldnt crank.

And yes back in the day when many of the piddo classics went up the dudes were seriously hard core. Respect!!

I am sort of glad that we dont complicate our grades with seriousness or pro factors. i love the simple linear grading but the route description becomes very important.
