I don't think the dangers in the gym are as bad as they are outdoors. One of the main things a helmet does is protect the head from falling objects. I don't think there are going to be as many falling objects indoors as there are outdoors eg falling rocks. Also outside climbs tend to have a lot more sharp edges and ledges that would really hurt if your head hit them, whilst indoor climbs generally have quite a 'clean' profile. I personally wear a helmet most of the time when I'm climbing outdoors. I've never worn one indoors, although my school once took some kids to the climbing gym and made them all wear helmets indoors... guess it was a liability thing.
