Lysterfield Park was quarried for granite last century. The abandoned quarries in Lysterfield Park and adjacent Churchill Park are useless for climbing because they are short, muddy and heavily vegetated but there are more modern quarries in the region that are also disused and could possibly add some evening entertainment for Eastern Suburb climbers. What can be done to open these sites to the public?

The proposed parkland at the abandoned quarry in Upper Ferntree Gully (Melways 74 D4) has been locked up behind cyclone fencing for four years to my knowledge. The face is relatively clean for a single pitch but the top is heavily vegetated with no safe access at present.

The southern car park at Cardinia reservoir (Mel 210 F4) overlooks the most convenient and safe climbing in the eastern suburbs. There are possibly ten short routes on this man made cliff that would be suitable for top roping. Unfortunately access is forbidden, as the cliff is adjacent to the water with only a 2-3 metre shelf at its base (mustn't get the drinking water dirty).

The granite boulders at Mel 83 F3 call to me to be explored for bouldering every time I drive down Lysterfield Rd but seem to be unfortunately placed on private land.

Does anyone know of other sites in this region that could be explored and how we can get these sites opened to climbers?
