I know you said not to mention Krabi/Prha Nang but has anybody heard any more about the resort that was supposedly being built at tonsai? Laos is a great country and there's a fir bit of climbing around Vang Vieng and Lunag Prabang, which are both cool places to hang out but for very different reasons. Food in Laos is pretty average compared to Thailand and Vietnam but you won't starve, the landscape and the people are amazing, both VV and LP are on the tourist trail though so there will be lots of other people around but you rarely if ever get hassled by touts. I didn't climb when I was there earlier this year but I understand most of the routes are sport, and from what I hear you no longer need a permit to climb at most places. Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand is also a great place, and you can easliy spend a few days out at Crazy Horse Butress. If you google both Laos and Thailand climbing you should be able to find some stuff. Email me if you want a topo of some of some of the stuff in Laos, Ii had a look on the net and I couldn't find it again.
